Gibson Advanced Jumbo
In 1931, the first Martin-branded Dreadnaught acoustics appeared and they were wider, more powerful sounding guitars than other flat-top models. Gibson responded to the challenge by unveiling their “Jumbo” model in 1934.
It had a characteristic “round-shouldered” look, and a 16-inch wide Mahogany body that provided reserves of volume quite sufficient to match it’s rivals. But it’s $60 price tag proved to be too high, and it was discontinued in 1930.
The “Advanced Jumbo” was launched in the same year, priced at $80, but only remained available until 1940. It was reissued in the 1990s and gained recognition for the richness and subtlety of it’s tone.
