By the end of the 1940s, the Excel had emerged as the most popular D’Angelico model.

The larger, fancier Excel New Yorker may have produced a bit more volume, but as guitarists began putting pickups on their instruments, acoustic volume became less of an issue, and the comfort of the smaller Excel made it more attractive to many players.
