Hofner 172 Solid Body
By the early 1960s, the traditional, violin-inspired appearance of Hofner’s archtops was beginning to seem dated, especially in comparison with Fender’s slim, solid-bodied electrics. The German company responded by introducing it’s own solid guitars.
This 172 dates from around 1963. This model has only two pickups, but other 172s had three. It clearly shows the influence of the Fender stratocaster. It’s controls are basic and it’s finish relatively plain. Later Hofner solids were equipped with additional circuits and switches. By 1968, some were even sporting ostentatious colored vinyl body coverings.
These instruments all sold well, though it is likely that many of their customers bought them because they were affordable.
