Ibanez JS 10th Anniversary
Joe “Satch” Satriani was one of the most prominent rock guitar teachers when he introduced his virtuoso style to the masses with his 1986 solo album “Not of This Earth”. Within a year he was featured in Ibanez ads, and a year later he was an official endorser, playing Ibanez guitars onstage as the lead guitarist behind Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger on Jagger’s solo tour.
In 1990, Ibanez advertised a new JS signature model sporting a gleaming chrome finish, but when it appeared in stores, the JS1 had a standard paint finish. Like Ibanez’s JEM guitars, which were designed by one of Satriani’s former students, Steve Vai, the JS models featured Satriani’s preferred setup – Dimarzio pickups in a umbucker-single-humbucker configuration.
In 1998, a decade after Satriani’s official association with Ibanez, the company honored him with the JS 10th Anniversary. Nicknamed “Chrome Boy”, the limited-edition model featured a pair of humbuckers rather than JS’s typical HSH arrangement, and the twin humbuckers continue today as the standard offering on Ibanez’s JS models.
